Houston Astros pither Brandon Backe was among 10 people arrested during a brawl with police at a weekend wedding reception in a Galveston hotel bar.  According to police reports, the 30-year-old Backe, a member of the wedding party, ignored police orders to back away from the brawl and scuffled with police officers attempting to handcuff him.  One officer hit Backe twice in the face before he was finally subdued.

Police resorted to the use of a taser on a 19-year-old member of the wedding party who was resisting arrest and also offered the the teenager’s 46-year-old father a dose of the same medecine.  Police also shot pepper spray at the surrounding crowd.

Backe has been charged with interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest.  The tasered 19-year-old has been charged with three count of assault on a public servant and two counts of retaliation.  Nine others were arrested on charges ranging from public intoxication to resisting arrest.

Backe’s police beating was simply a literal extension of what happened on the field this season as the pitcher went 9-14 for the Astros with a 6.05 ERA in his 2008 campaign.
