Light heavyweight boxer Dzhakhon Kurbanov of Tajikistan was disqualified from an Olympic quarterfinal bout Tuesday night for biting Kazakhstan opponent Yerkebulah Shynaliyev.
The bite came as the two boxers clinched in the final seconds of the third round. Kurbanov, who trailed 12-6 at the time, had already been warned multiple times for shoving and holding Shynaliyev. Kurbanov had not, however, received a warning for biting which may have led Kurbanov to believe he could get away with at least a nibble or two before facing disqualification.
When Shynavliyev angrily emerged from the clinch with a bitten and bloodied shoulder, the referee stopped the fight.
It is unclear whether it was the frustration of being completely dominated in the ring, the presence of Evander Holyfield in the gymnasium or simple hunger pangs that inspired Kurbanov to go Mike Tyson on his opponent. Dark Side is just happy to report that unlike Holyfield, Shynaliyev was able to escape with both his ears intact.
