Less than a week after Spanish basketball and tennis teams drew criticism for photographs in which players used their fingers to pull their eyes tighter in an attempt to look more Chinese, a photograph showing members of the Argentine women’s soccer team in a similar pose has found its way onto the Internet.

The photo appeared in the August 5th edition of the Argentine newspaper Ole as part of a preview of the team’s first match of the Olympic tournament against Canada. According to the British website The Telegraph, the photo’s Argentine run did not provoke controversy.

Dark Side is starting to wonder if there isn’t some Spanish punchline that goes with the pose that we’re not getting or something. Because as we said last week, racist or not, the “Chinese eyes” thing just isn’t that funny.

The Argentine women’s soccer team losing every one of its Olympic matches including a 0-2 shutout loss to China, on the other hand, does strike Dark Side as kind of funny. Not really funny “ha ha” though. More of a “shut up and take your medicine you ignorant punks” funny.
